Dear Franklin Student and Parent,
Franklin High School conducts a Summer Reading Program in order to promote excellence in reading and writing. This summer’s reading program requires students to read one work of fiction and one work of nonfiction of the student’s choice. The two books may not be works that are, or have been, required reading in English or social studies classes or have been made into movies. If you are not sure about the last part you should look it up first. After reading the two books, students must respond to their reading by completing two reading logs. Students must complete their summer reading logs on the form that the English department has provided for each Franklin High School student. Additional forms are available in the school’s main office.
The reading logs identify the date the assignments will be due when you report to your English class on the first Monday of October. These logs will be graded and averaged into your English grade for the first or second quarter. Failure to complete the summer reading will result in a failing grade for the assignment.
If you need suggestions for the two free reading selections, lists of nonfiction and fiction titles are available in the school library and in the school’s main office. These recommended, but not required, titles are also available on the school’s website: http://franklinhs.bcps.org/ Current high school students are welcome to check out books for the summer from the school library prior to the close of school in June. All summer check-outs are due back the first day of school.
Reading and writing are year-long and life-long activities which offer students opportunities to expand their cultural horizons. We appreciate your support of the Summer Reading Program and thank you for accepting the summer reading challenge.
Sincerely,
The Franklin Faculty |
